Mitos y Leyendas/Myths & Legends

Sculptures by Tomás Owen
Drawings by J. Michael Walker

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 13, 2007 from 7-11 pm

The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present its new exhibit, “Myths and Legends/Mitos y Leyendas”, featuring sculptures by Tomás Owen and drawings by J. Michael Walker. If myths and legends are the stories that have been passed down for generations, Owen and Walker have created new – and reconfigured other – legends and myths. A mixing of real and imaginary characters, places, and events populate Avenue 50 Studio’s gallery and draw us into an atmospheric world of fantasy and supernatural beings.

Tomás Owen sculpts moody yet playful characters in ceramic stoneware. In one piece, the mythological satyr, Tomás recreates this icon, energizing its classical form with movement and almost perceptible sound.

J. Michael Walker’s drawings assemble mythic imagery and tradition to offer atmospheric, imaginary worlds. In “The Old Moon Remembers” he builds a magical castle in a mysterious landscape; careful reflection informs that this is Cholula, where the Spaniards built a great cathedral atop a pre-Colombian temple. The full moon as indigenous visage gazes over lands once possessed, still affected.

Please join us for “Myths and Legends/Mitos y Leyendas” as we explore a unique world filled with imagination and fancy.
